What do you need to know about renting a boat in Barcelona?
Barcelona is a modern city, fun and with many things to do in it, but in addition to all this we are lucky to be by the sea and have a large fleet of rental boats so you can enjoy the wonderful Mediterranean Sea.
At Barcelona Boat Tours we want to inform you about everything you have to know about boat rentals in Barcelona, such as: What types of rentals are there, types of boats that I can rent, where can I sail from Barcelona, etc. in addition we will give you a list of tips for when you rent your boat.
Types of boat rental in Barcelona
With or without skipper
Boat rental with skipper:
It is the most requested rental in Barcelona due to the high demand for rentals by people who do not have a license to sail. It is the most recommended type of rental to spend a few hours or a whole day sailing. The professional skippers know the area very well, possible shelters, better areas to anchor, beautiful places, etc. Even for those who have a sailing licence it can be a good option to relax and participate in sailing with the skipper without worries.
Boat rental without skipper (bareboat):
This option will be the most indicated if you already have some experience sailing. We recommend it for rentals of more than one day, for example, to spend a week on the Costa Brava or two weeks on the Balearic Islands.
According to the duration of the rental
Rent a boat in Barcelona by hour:
Renting a boat in Barcelona for 2 or 3 hours is one of the most popular types of rental in recent years. It is ideal for all kinds of celebrations: birthdays, hen parties, etc.
Most boats can be chartered for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 8 hours. These types of rentals usually include fuel, a skipper and a welcome drink.
With the 2-hour rental you will be able to appreciate the beautiful views of Barcelona from the sea, passing through Barceloneta and take a dip into the sea. If you hire the 4 hours you can get to the Montgat beach where the waters are cleaner and clearer.
Full day boat rental:
By renting a boat for 8 hours you can reach destinations such as Sitges, Garraf, Castelldefels, Masnou, Premià. Beautiful destinations with ports where you can have lunch in their restaurants and then continue with the sailing day. Depending on the type of boat you can go further or closer, for example, on a sailboat we recommend spending a few hours anchored in Montgat to enjoy some swim and snorkel and lunch in Masnou where there are quite a few good restaurants to eat paella and seafood. On the other hand, if you rent a yacht you can get to Sitges or even to the beginning of the Costa Brava: Blanes.
Multi-day rental:
By renting a boat in Barcelona for several days we will have 5 main options as best destinations: Cosata brava, Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
These destinations are famous because of their beautiful beaches with crystal clear water and white sand. Destinations highly appreciated by sailing lovers and increasingly crowded by number of boats of all kinds.
This type of rental does not usually include fuel and other extras in the price.
Types of boats for rent in Barcelona
Sailboats
Renting a sailboat in Barcelona is the most recommended in terms of quality / price ratio and capacity of the boat / price. Sailboats have a very low fuel cost, which makes the price of excursions much lower than other types of boats.
Sailboats are usually equipped with a fridge, toilet and several cabins to rest. They usually have a maximum capacity of 11 passengers.
Catamarans
Catamarans have more passenger capacity and are more stable (something appreciated for people with a tendency to seasickness). They have more space on the deck and often have nets to lie down and sunbathe. Most are rented by the hour. Charter a catamaran in Barcelona is ideal for large group celebrations.
Yachts
Renting a yacht will be a good option if budget is not an issue. They offer a lot of comfort and speed to quickly go from one beach to another but have the drawback of high fuel consumption.
Motor boats
Speedboats are the most manageable and fun boats but have the drawback of capacity. They usually fit between 4 and 9 passengers. In Barcelona there are several types of boats available for rent: boats without a license, speedboats with toys (wake, ski, donnut, banana, etc.) and luxury speedboats.
Ports of Barcelona
In Barcelona there are 3 main ports:
Port vell
It is the oldest port in Barcelona as its name indicates. It contains the merchandise port and 4 marinas: Marina Vela, One oceans club, the nautical and the maritime club.
Marina Vela is the newest one and is located closer to the main entrance. Most of the boats it houses are medium-large and mostly luxury boats. It is right next to the luxurious Hotel Vela (W hotel) and is the one furthest from the city center.
The One Oceans club is located next to Passeig Joan de Borbó, next to Pla de Palau, close to the Born district. This has moored the most luxurious yachts in the city, most of them of great length and economic value.
Finally, the yacht club and the maritime club are located on the moll de la fusta next to the Maremagnum shopping center, near the Columbus statue at the end of the Ramblas. To access them by sailing you have to cross a drawbridge that opens every half hour.
Port Olimpic
It is the busiest port in Barcelona. Located in the Villa Olímpica neighbourhood, it was built for the 1992 Olympics. In summer, the bustle of people and the great movement of private boats and rental boats are fascinating. Most are small-medium-sized boats, especially sailboats. It has a restaurants area with a lot of variety and a toilet area with showers for port users.
Port Forum
It is the furthest port from the center of Barcelona. It was built in 2004 for the Forum de les cultures. It is located in the northern part of the city, bordering Sant Adrià de Besós. Boat rentals are also made in this port, but in less quantity than in the rest.
